I pumped my tires at the gas station after coming back from a road trip.  Whenever I inflate my tires, I get nervous.  I usually pay $3 for a 3 minutes air pump.  I always forget the air pressure for tires, so I always have to check and memorize them first.  Then, I have to turn the car around to get all the tires inflated.  Once I failed to complete for one use, and had to pay for the extra three dollars.

ロードトリップから戻った後、ガソリンスタンドで車のタイヤに空気を入れた。タイヤに空気を入れるとき、いつも緊張する。たいてい3分、3ドルの場所で空気を入れていて、いつもタイヤの空気圧を忘れるので、まず空気圧をチェックして覚えなきゃいけない。次に全部のタイヤに空気を入れるため、車の向きも変えなきゃいけない。1回、一度に全部の空気を入れられず、3ドルさらに課金しなければいけなかった。

After baking them several times, I didn’t need to open a recipe. Everything became on autopilot. All the details were in my head including the ingredients, bench time and the temperature in the oven.

◆bench time vs. proofing time
bench time は業界用語で、プロたちの間では使われるけれど、一般的な会話では proofing time が普通。他に resting time という選択肢も。

少しずつ、英単語に冠詞のつけるつけない、 a なのか the なのかの感覚が身についてきた。今やっているやり方が、多少順番としてよい気がしている。

いつも寝る前に、英語の本を読む。本を読んだ後に、たいてい英作文を作る。1/2くらいの確率で本で出てきた新しい単語、使いやすそうな言い回しを使って文を作る。残りのは、自分の日常生活を説明するとき、適切に表現できているか怪しいところを具体的に表現したり、思いついたことをまとめたり、新しく学んだ単語を使ったり様々だ。

翌日、英会話講師に添削をしてもらう。何日もやっていると、だんだんどこを直されるかが見えてくる。主に、冠詞と、動詞の部分の言い回しが多い。自分でも流れが悪いなとなんとなくわかっているところが、ピシッと直される。

そして再び夜、本を読む。すると、添削のとき、the はいらないと言われた状況と近いような例が本であると、その箇所に気づくことができる。少しずつ、訂正された箇所と読書がうまくつながるようになってくる。さらに、本を読むことで、少しずつ語彙が増えるまでいかなくても、新しい単語を見かける機会が増える。かつ、読んだ分だけ、英文の語順、表現が自分のなかに蓄積されていく。結果、少しずつなんとなく文章が書きやすくなってきた気がする。

Until my furniture arrives, I have to sleep in a sleeping bag. I have a sleeping pad and mat I use for camping underneath. Since I’ve started this sleeping style, my quality of sleep has worsened. I can’t toss and turn because the width of the forming pad is too narrow to move around. I also fall off the foaming pad a lot, and this often wakes me up unfortunately.

今回の文は、『Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less』(Greg Mckeown) の17章 Progress の一節、”Because a small, concrete win creates momentum and affirms our faith in our further success.” から。momentum には冠詞がいらないの？　と英会話講師に聞くと、rarely とのこと。例外をあげてほしいと訊ねて返ってきた答えは

Writing every day helped me build the momentum I needed to keep improving.

具体的な momentum に関して話しているので、この場合 the はなくてもいいけどあったほうが自然かなとのこと。the がいらない他の例を訊ねると、ありすぎるといいつつ、上の話と相関性のある単語では consistency, progress をあげてくれました。

Writing each day makes me more detail oriented. I’ve become more attentive of prepositions, singular and plural words. Now, I can sometimes make sentence corrections by myself although they tend to be corrected later anyway.

Writing every day has made me more detail-oriented. I’ve become much more aware of things like prepositions and singular versus plural nouns. These days, I can often spot and correct my own mistakes, although there are usually still a few things that need to be fixed afterward.

毎日書くことで、細かいところに意識がいくようになってきた。前置詞、単数名詞なのか複数名詞といったところにより気づくようになった。最近は、後で直されるところはあるものの、間違いに自分で気づき、修正ができるようになってきた。
